Recording Vocals

One of the most important aspects of achieving a great recording of your song is a great sounding vocal.

As a songwriter myself, plus being someone who has working with solo artists, songwriters, groups and even orchestras and big bands, I know that whatever genre of music I am recording, the vocal sound is absolutely crucial to the success of the mission.

For a songwriter this is even more of a focus. A “perfect” vocal is an absolute must.

I work with each vocalist to get what I believe to be the right sound for each song that they sing. Issues such as mike position, distance and direction are paramount, and each song needs to be approached as a new mission.

Once the vocal part has been recorded, the task of sitting the vocal in the track begins.

Again, depending on the type of track, voice and song, each recording is a new mission with its own set of possibilities.

Armed with a toolset which includes tools such as eq, compression, de-esser, noise gate, reverb, delay, enhancers and many other such delights, we set about getting the “perfect” mix.

Another thing to consider is leaving a space for the vocal part using both panning - physical space - and overall eq - sonic space.

As you can see, getting the vocal “just right” is going to be somewhat an artistic process as well as a scientific one.

Finally, one of the things that I have spent a fair amount of time and money on is building a vocal booth that enables the recording of a colour free vocal. It has proven to be money and time well spent. I use it to record both vocals and acoustic instruments. One result is an enhancement of the achievable stereo image through the precise placement of acoustic guitar and vocals in the stereo image.
